Coherent light passes both slits and each slit acts as a new source of waves. Where the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths the waves add (bright fringe); where it is an odd number of half-wavelengths they cancel (dark fringe). Increasing λ or L spreads the fringes; increasing d squeezes them.
