Course overview
One of the major goals in scientific research is the precise and highly sensitive measurement of physical quantities. Classical sensors have been widely used as the primary tools for measuring physical parameters and have demonstrated reliable performance in many scientific and industrial applications. However, their ability to detect extremely small variations is limited by intrinsic factors such as thermal noise, electronic noise, and fundamental physical constraints.
A quantum sensor is a quantum system that utilizes quantum objects (such as atomic spins, electrons, and photons) and quantum phenomena (including quantum coherence, quantum interference, and quantum entanglement) to measure physical quantities of interest. By exploiting these quantum effects, quantum sensors enable the detection of extremely small changes in noisy environments with significantly enhanced precision and sensitivity.
This emerging field focuses on the design and engineering of quantum states and quantum measurement techniques. Based on the principles of quantum mechanics, quantum sensors can achieve performance beyond the limitations of their classical counterparts. They have broad applications across various scientific, research, and industrial fields, including medicine, biotechnology, telecommunications, aerospace, geosciences, and beyond.
