Quantum Communications is a branch of science and technology that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to transmit information and establish secure communication systems. It relies on quantum phenomena such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum measurement to develop communication methods that differ fundamentally from conventional approaches. One of its most important applications is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which enables two parties to establish shared cryptographic keys while allowing certain types of eavesdropping to be detected through the principles of quantum physics. Quantum communications also encompasses the transmission of quantum states, the distribution of entanglement between distant systems, and the development of quantum networks. In the future, these technologies could support advanced secure communications, interconnect quantum processors, and enable the development of a quantum internet. However, practical implementation faces challenges such as photon loss, noise, distance limitations, and the difficulty of storing and distributing entanglement. Consequently, quantum repeaters, quantum memories, and photonic technologies are important areas of ongoing research in this field.
