Simply put, an algorithm is a precise set of instructions for solving a problem. It tells a computer, step by step, what to do with the information it receives until it ultimately produces an answer. Sorting a list of names, finding the shortest path on a map, multiplying two numbers, or simulating the weather—all of these depend on algorithms. The advances of the past 70 years in the world of classical computing have not simply been about making hardware faster; the development of better algorithms has also played a fundamental role in these transformations. In fact, in many cases, a clever algorithm has delivered a far greater speedup than an entirely new generation of processors! And the same is true in the quantum world.

Quantum Computers and the Future of Computing

In the 1940s, the first electronic computers emerged: machines like ENIAC and Colossus that were enormous, power-hungry systems built with vacuum tubes and rudimentary circuits. Yet within just a few decades, computers had spread across the world, eventually becoming so small that systems containing billions of transistors could fit into your pocket in the form of a mobile phone.

From the very beginning of these transformations, scientists had one big question: How far can we keep shrinking these computing systems?

Moore’s Law states that the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years! Think about that for a moment; Moore’s Law was not merely a prediction. It also came with a warning: there would be a physical limit to how far transistors could be miniaturized. Because once their dimensions reach the atomic scale, quantum mechanics enters the picture; electrons begin to tunnel through barriers, energy levels become unstable, and classical scaling begins to break down.

This may remind you of quantum computers, but there is a subtle point here: quantum mechanics has played a fundamental role in the development of the very classical computers you use today, from the very beginning. Transistors, lasers, and semiconductor physics all rely on quantum effects.

Amid these developments, a controversial lecture by Richard Feynman opened up a new line of research. He argued that if nature itself is quantum mechanical, then to simulate nature efficiently, we should use quantum systems themselves. And that was the spark that set us on the path to where we are today.

Since the sixth century BCE, humans have sought to understand motion, celestial bodies, and the nature of matter. Over the centuries, they gradually developed a structured framework for describing nature, and by the late nineteenth century, it was widely believed that physics was nearly complete; as Lord Kelvin remarked in 1900, nothing remained but more precise measurements. But with the problem of blackbody radiation and the “ultraviolet catastrophe,” everything changed: Max Planck introduced the idea of quantized energy, Albert Einstein proposed the photon, Niels Bohr presented his atomic model, and Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger laid the foundations of quantum mechanics. A new world emerged; one built upon probability, the wave function, superposition, and entanglement. Today, quantum technologies promise computers capable of solving complex problems, discovering new materials and medicines, and even enabling quantum artificial intelligence. The question is: in which problems does true quantum advantage actually lie, and where is the boundary between reality and exaggeration?
