Fiber Optic Sensors in Industry and Medicine: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Prospects

Fiber optic sensors, as one of the most significant achievements of photonics technology, have played a remarkable role in the development of measurement, monitoring, and diagnostic systems in recent years. Due to their outstanding characteristics, including high sensitivity and accuracy, immunity to electromagnetic interference, distributed sensing capability, compact size, flexibility, and the ability to operate under harsh environmental conditions, these sensors have become an ideal solution for industrial and medical applications. In this presentation, the fundamental operating principles and classification of fiber optic sensors will be briefly introduced. Subsequently, the most important applications of this technology in industry, including structural health monitoring, oil and gas industries, power plants, aerospace, transportation, and smart manufacturing, will be reviewed. Furthermore, emerging medical applications of these sensors, including vital sign monitoring, minimally invasive instruments, medical imaging, disease diagnosis, and intelligent therapeutic devices, will be discussed.
